Attention Middle and High School students. Foothills Learning Center is starting a Communicators for Christ Speech and Debate Club. We will be meeting one afternoon a month to prepare for upcoming competitions and have some fun. This is an amazing way to earn credit and develop professional skills as well.
Debate topics
Team Debate - That the US fedearl government should substantially change its policy on illegal immirgration.
Linclon Douglas - That the USA ought to more highly value isolationism.
Apologetics Topics The existence and nature of God, The Scriptures, The nature, purpose, and destiny of man, Salvation or how to know God, Christ.

The Education NW Resources Learning Center in Spokane, Washington, would like to offer a correspondence/Internet German I course starting this fall. This class would be open to grades 8-12. Higher level 7th graders would also be included. German II and III courses would be offered in the future, depending on interest. Also, if we have enough students, I would like to plan an Outdoor School experience in Germany and Austria in about 3 years.

I am scheduling a field trip to Pacific Science Center for early Nov. or if that is not possible, the first week of Dec. for ANW students to view the Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibit. This is a 90 minute exhibit, with timed entrances for groups. The cost is $10.50 for K-12 students and adults and includes an IMAX and Planetarium/Laser show.
If you are interested in attending with your students/parents please let me know ASAP so that I may make tickets available on a first come first served basis. I will need to know the number of tickets you are requesting. More details will be sent once I finalize this outing. — Barbara

I am offering High School Chemistry and 2nd Year Biology for the 2006-2007 school year.
Chemistry will be using the Apologia text and will meet Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Second Year Biology will use the Apologia text with a focus and human anatomy and physiology and meet Wednesday afternoons from 1-3 p.m.
Both classes will meet in my home in the Auburn/Federal Way area.

This summer the NSF SPRITE project is offering a free teacher institute, which uses curriculum that integrates art, music, and student-created computer animation to teach math and science concepts. The curriculum is especially directed to girls and other students traditionally underrepresented in many areas of math and science.

Academy Northwest nearly "swept" all the top awards in the senior division at the South Puget Sound Region contest on Thursday, March 25. Academy NW students took 1st (Kayla Kandt - Darin and Anna Perrollaz's daughter), 2nd (Devon Alexander - Jeff Alexander's son) and 3rd (Melissa Rankin - from the "Klondike" team that took 1st at nationals two years ago)in the Historical Papers category (out of 50 entries). Another student, Rachel Culver took 1st in senior individual documentary, and Anna Dubnow took 1st in senior individual performance, and a team of 4 students (Sam Smith, Becca Krebs, Alan Brannan, and Alison Brannan) took 1st in senior group performance. Although we did not win in the senior group documentary, we did have a team place 4th.
From the Marsyville Learning center, Patti Deal reports that a reception, hosted by the Washington State Historical Society, was held at the Capitol on March 9 for our legislators, and board members of the Washington State Historical Society, National Historical Society and National History Day, to name a few. Tony Deal was one of 10 students to be asked to present at this reception.
March 11 was the regional competition for our area and Tony earned the first place award for his individual performance entitled "The 54th Massachusetts: Taking a Stand for Freedom!"

· Elizabeth Carson-Director of New York City Hold www.nychold.com (math advocacy group in NY) will present the history of why US math is inferior and explain why it poses a threat to our national economy and security.
· William "Bill" Hook-Aerospace Research Scientist and Math Researcher, University of Victoria, will present research showing what standards are necessary to be globally competitive. He will also explain how California improved their state math standards, and show their resulting success.
· Cliff F. Mass-Professor of Atmospheric Science, University of Washington, will present college math remediation rates and explain how that has negatively affected higher-level math and science instruction and opportunities.
· Craig Parsley-Elementary teacher, will explain why teaching, practicing and mastering basic math skills in the elementary years builds a solid foundation for math success in later years.
· Niki Hayes-Former principal and high school math teacher, will discuss the success for under served students with more basic skills math programs.

The Electronic Field Trip Web site is a key part of the program and has been honored by the Center for Digital Education with a Best of the Web award and gold and silver awards at the 2005 World Media Festival. The site provides standards-based curriculum developed by teachers participating in the broadcast. The lesson plans cover geography, math, writing, art and more.
There is one broadcast remaining in the 2005-06 Electronic Field Trip lineup:
* "Exploring Nature's Plumbing System: Caves of the National Park System" - Caves are much more than nature's plumbing system. They are sites of exploration, adventure, shelter and cutting-edge research. The National Park Service will show off a handful of caves, including Carlsbad Caverns - the deepest limestone cave in the United States - and answer questions about stalactites, stalagmites and even cave bacon.
Carlsbad, N.M., April 25 Electronic Field Trip partners include the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum; Space Center Houston/NASA; the National Park Foundation; Garfield and PAWS, Inc.; the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum; and five Smithsonian entities - The Environmental Research Center, National Museum of the American Indian, National Museum of American History, National Air and Space Museum and National Museum of Natural History.
